THE Medical Doctors Association of
Zambia has observed that International Women's Day should be a timely reminder
on the need to stay focused on achieving gender equality in the country.
Association registrar Nelly Zulu says 50 years of Zambia's independence should
also be a time to reflect on the important strides women have made.
She said
this at the International Women's Day celebrations and honouring of female
surgeons organised by the Zambia Association of University Women (ZAUW).
"It is
important that we honour our female surgeons because they are women who are
distinguished in service of humanity," Dr Zulu said.
Five female surgeons were
on Saturday awarded for their contribution in the medical field.
Dr Zulu also
commended ZAUW for its role in empowering young girls in various disciplines.
She said young girls should be empowered to maximise their potential and achieve
their goals.
And speaking at the same event, ZAUW president Lucy Muyoyeta
implored female surgeons to act as an inspiration to young girls.
Ms Muyoyeta
also said female surgeons need to be celebrated as they are few in the country.
"Our country has few female surgeons who have managed to break through this once
male- dominated field," she said.
